A Q&A with the Casting Director for LEGO MASTERS

LEGO Masters is a really fun competition show, and it’s gearing up for its second season. I greatly appreciated the talent and imagination from the contestants in Season 1 and cannot wait to see what is ahead of us in Season 2. Allison Kaz serves as casting director for the show and I recently got to ask her a few questions about the casting process. Please remember that they’re currently accepting applications and you could be the next LEGO Master.

Tommy: What is the casting process like for LEGO Masters?

Allison: To be considered for the show, contestants have to fill out an application at LEGOMASTERS.TV and upload a couple of photos of their favorite original LEGO creations. It is a simple application process. Those that advance will have a remote interview with a casting producer.

Tommy: What do you look for in applicants/applications? What are the tips you have for people wanting to apply?

Allison: Creativity goes a long way! We are always looking for skill, creativity, story-telling and of course personality. We want a variety of duos who have a fun & relatable dynamic, who are both passionate about LEGO and have the creativity to tell a story with their builds.

Tommy: Can you tell us anything or tease any of the challenges that the builders will have to do in Season 2?

Allison: I can't because I am just involved in the casting selection process. I'll be eagerly watching the promos with the rest of you!

Tommy: What was your favorite challenge from the first season and your favorite build?

Allison: This is a tough one. There were so many episodes that I loved. One in particular was a "Cut in Half" challenge where contestants had to build the other half of a real object. Richard and Flynn did this incredible clockwork man with working gears!

Tommy: Are there any applicants that you loved that fell just short or was it pretty obvious who was going to be accepted?

Allison: The casting selection is always tough on every show and Lego Masters was no exception. We want the right mix of teams that bring a variety of personality, skill and that intangible quality or dynamic to the mix. We look for contestants that someone can relate to, be inspired by or have the potential to surprise us. For me, it's that visceral reaction! The team dynamic is so important.
