COBRA KAI Star Xolo Maridueña Talks About His Embarrassing BLUE BEETLE Audition Video That May Have Helped Land Him the Role

Xolo Maridueña is a busy guy, hard at work on his hit series Cobra Kai, doing some voice work on a couple different series, and landing the role of DC’s Blue Beetle, a Mexican teenager who finds an alien beetle that gives him superpowered armor. Maridueña is as charming as he is talented and has a bright future ahead. I recently got the chance to sit down and chat with him after viewing the fourth season of Cobra Kai, and while I loved hearing about the series, which is one of my favorites, I had to ask about his getting the role of Jaime Reyes, aka DC’s Blue Beetle.

When I asked if his knowledge of martial arts from his work on Cobra Kai helped him land the role, he laughed, and responded:

“You know what’s funny? When it was announced that Blue Beetle was being made, we were filming the last season of Cobra Kai, or Season 4 I should say. I was living with Jacob (Bertrand), and I was in our living room, and I posted this video on Instagram that was like ‘My Audition for Blue Beetle,’ and I tried to do like a one-armed pushup, and I couldn’t do one. And then like months and months later, I got to meet Walter Hamada, one of the heads over at DC, and he was like ‘That video was pretty funny. I saw that video, and it was kind of funny.’ And I was like ‘oh snap!’ Like, it’s crazy to think, and I’m so blessed to have this opportunity, but sometimes it makes me think like, maybe I should be careful about what I post! But I’m grateful. I guess Walter has eyes everywhere, so if he’s listening to this, I’m grateful for you too.”

He went on to say that playing the role of Blue Beetle and representing a Mexican superhero is an honor, and something that he doesn’t take lightly. It will be cool to see the big screen adaptation of this character come to life, and I think Xolo is a great choice for the role.

You can see him in Season 4 of Cobra Kai on Netflix this weekend, and Blue Beetle is set to hit theatres on August 18th, 2023. Are you excited to see a Blue Beetle film?
