James Wan Reveals Details About AQUAMAN and His Relationship with Mera

Not long ago, Zack Snyder offered us our first look at Amber Heard as Mera the Queen of Atlantis in Justice League. This character is obviously going to play a big role in James Wan's solo Aquaman film, and in a recent interview with Bustle, the director revealed some details about the love/hate relationship that the two will have in the movie.

The director previously described the film as a "swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story. It's ultimately a quest story in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone." He now adds to that, saying that he really wants "to get the classic action-adventure-romance aspect through that, and I think that’s kind of fun."

If you look at the kind of relationships that lead characters had in Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone, then you'll understand the kind of love/hate relationship that Aquaman and Mera will have, and I think it's a fun way to approach it. Wan explained:

"It starts off initially with them not quite clicking with each other. But then as the story progresses as they learn to try and work together, they get closer and closer. I think those stories are always such a great place for a filmmaker like myself to have fun with my actors."

When talking about Heard's portrayal of Mera in the film, Wan added:

"I think that dynamic will be really interesting between the two. Amber’s character is super strong, she’s very powerful as well. You don’t wanna mess with her. I think Amber will bring that sense of strength, but at the same time, we also want someone who has a sort of feminine quality to her as well. She’s a bit of a contrast to Momoa, who’s more of a muscular machine almost."

I really do hope she can pull it off. I've never really been impressed by anything Heard has done in her career. But maybe she'll be good in this role. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Aquaman is set to hit theaters on July 18th, 2018. What do you think about the direction Wan is taking the relationship of these two characters?
