Talking LEGO with Maria & Philip from LEGO MASTERS

Last week, Maria & Philip were eliminated from LEGO Masters. The couple put up a fight and made it decently far, but in the end, their windmill couldn’t withstand very high-speed winds. I was able to ask the couple a few questions about LEGO and the show. You can watch new episodes of LEGO Masters on FOX every Tuesday night.

Tommy: Outside of building the projects on LEGO Masters, what was your favorite part of the experience?

Maria & Philip: Without a question our favorite part of the LEGO Masters experience was meeting and getting to know the 22 other contestants on the show. We all come from different places and phases of life, but we have this hobby of that unites us. And then we were brought together to have this amazing shared experience of LEGO Masters. We experienced the highs, the lows, the excitement and exhaustion together. And it made us family.

Tommy: What was your favorite idea for a build that your partner thought of?

Maria: When we were given the Make and Shake challenge Philip knew immediately what we should do. He knew that we needed to create flowing vines around the building the break up the square shape of the build. It looked so beautiful and unique when it was done!

Philip: The Hat's Incredible challenge started off slow for us. Maria was working on a crown for the top of the sun and it started to take shape as a hat. I loved the meta "hat on a hat" idea and we went with it! She also added bits of ombre color to the hat which I carried down into the clouds. It gave our build this subtle pop of color that was really effective!

Tommy: What do you think is your greatest strength as a builder?

Philip: Architecture and building quickly.

Maria: Adding color and fun little details.

Tommy: Which challenge were you most excited for when it was unveiled and was there one that wasn't exciting at first that became exciting as you built for it?

Maria: I was immediately excited for the One Hanging Brick build. We knew what we wanted to do for the design, but what made it so exciting was that it was a sculpting, creative build. Creating colorful, detailed pieces is one of our favorite ways to use LEGO. I was definitely not excited about drawing the Cabaret Girl for our Hero Shot build. We both felt a bit clueless with what to do with her, but in the end we were so excited about the build. It was one of our favorites!

Philip: I was the most excited about the Make and Shake challenge. I knew immediately what our concept would be and we worked together to make a beautiful building. The best part was that it out-performed our expectations. We were so thrilled with the build! The Hat's Incredible challenge started off slow for us. We struggled to pull together our concept, but by the end we were really happy with it.
