Rob Marshall seems a bit iffy with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4
It's been confirmed that director Rob Marshall is the man that may end up directing the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie... or is he? He said he was! As of right now he is currently out and about promoting his next film Nine, and there is no doubt he is going to get a lot of question about his involvement with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
He recently talked to Comingsoon and it sounds like he's not so sure if it's going to happen or not.
We’re still trying to figure out if it’s going to all happen. If it happens–I think Johnny’s doing a movie with Angelina Jolie in the spring [The Tourist] — so if it happens, we’ll start in the summer, and we’ll see. I’m excited. If it happens, it happens. I’d be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I’m excited about the genre.
There is a lot of "if it happens" talk in there. Back at Comic-Con producer Jerry Bruckheimer was talking about getting the film into production by April or May of next year. As you might have heard Disney has already dropped two films, Wedding Band and 20,000 Leauges Under the Sea. It makes me wonder if there is a possibility that the fourth Pirates film might not make it to the big screen.
The Pirates franchise is a cash cow for Disney so I don't see why they wouldn't do it unless Johnny Depp is out. Maybe Marshal is the one in a iffy situation, and not the movie. Maybe he isn't sure if he will be directing it. Apparently there isn't even a script for the movie yet! When Marshall was asked about the story he said:
I would need to read a script first.
But as we have reported earlier the movie will be based on a novel by Tim Powers called On Stranger Tides, and here is the plot summary of that story:
Puppeteer John Chandagnac, bound for Jamaica to recover stolen money from his uncle, becomes Jack Shandy after pirates attack his ship and force him to join their crew. Shandy’s struggle to accept his new life grounds the story for readers, even as Blackbeard and vodun magicians whisk everyone away to dreamlike lands where the Fountain of Youth itself awaits. The chaotic sea battles sing, though at times key events happen so quickly that they get lost in the shuffle as Jack tries to comprehend where he’s going and what’s at stake.
I'm not too concerned about the movie. I'm in no rush to see another Pirates of the Caribbean film, and I'm sure Disney will eventually pull it all together at get it into production.
