David Cronenberg Casts Knightley, Waltz and Fessbender in his next film THE TALKING CURE

David Cronenberg has surprised us with a new film he is making, one we didn’t even know about until today. It looks like his next film is starting to take shape in a big way, by casting the characters for the story. He’s brought in Keira Knightly, Christoph Waltz and Michael Fassbender to star in his film adaptation of the Christopher Hampton book, The Talking Cure.

This is definitely a solid cast, Christoph Waltz is such a wonder actor, he was amazing in Inglourious Basterds, which Fassbender was also in.

Cronenberg’s next film was supposed to be the Tom Cruise / Denzel Washington film The Matarese Circle, but when Cruise went on to star in Knight and Day instead, so the film fell through. Cronenberg  then moved on to another film called Cosmopolis, which is based on the book from Don DeLillo, about a 28 year-old billionaire who crosses Manhatten for a haircut. That’s what I thought his next movie was going to be, but now we have The Talking Cure, which is already casting.

What happened to Cosmopolis? Who knows. Maybe it will eventually get made, but it looks like this one is shaping up much faster.

The announcement came from Hopscotch Films on facebook with a little synopsis:

More LA buys… Hopscotch will release ‘The Talking Cure’ directed by Cronenberg, starringKeira Knightly,Michael Fassbender,Christoph Waltz. A beautiful young woman, driven mad by her past. An ambitious doctor on a mission to succeed. An esteemed mentor with a revolutionary cure. Let the mind games begin…

Here is a full description of the book:

Overshadowed by portents of the coming wars, Zurich and Vienna are the setting for this tale of emotional vicissitude and intellectual debate. The Talking Cureis an intimate picture of the birth of psychoanalysis and of two intense and inextricably interwoven relationships. Carl Jung uses Sigmund Freud’s “talking cure” on Sabina, a young Russian hysteric with whom he will fall in love. Impressed with Jung’s results, Freud anoints him his successor, but when Jung develops his own theories they part ways. Sensitive and intelligent,The Talking Cureilluminates the origins of one of the twentieth century’s most influential schools of thought.

Cronenberg seems like the perfect director to bring this story to life. The guy knows how to mess with peoples heads. Did you see Videodrome!? And for those of you that need a reminder of what else he’s made here’s a few film… The Brood, Scanners, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Crash, A History of Violence, andEastern Promises.

What do you think about Cronenberg’s next movie?
