HUNGER GAMES Casts Thresh and Rue

Director Gary Ross has cast two new up-and-coming actors in the roles of Thresh and Rue in Lionsgate's highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games. Dayo Okeniyi has been cast in the role of Thresh, and Amandla Stenberg will be taking on the role of Rue. Neither one of the actors has a lot of acting work under their belt, this is definitely the best gig they've gotten. The seem to fit the roles they've been cast in.

The two actors will join the already cast Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. Lawrence will take on the lead role of Katniss Everdeen, Hemsworth has been cast as Gale Hawthorne and Hutcherson is set to play Peeta Mellark.

The chart below shows that District 11 and District 12 slots are filled. We've got ten more slots to go. Here's a break down of the characters Thresh and Rue.

SPOILER ALERT for the following description.

Thresh—The male tribute from District 11, who has the same dark brown skin as Rue but is not very similar in appearance, because he is so much bigger than her. He is very strong and physically well built, possessing immense strength. Thresh is quiet and solitary, and turns down invitations from the careers to join them. He kills Clove by smashing her skull with a rock as she is about to kill Katniss. He lets Katniss live because she sang to Rue as she died and buried her in flowers. Thresh is supposedly killed by Cato, but the details are unknown.

Rue—The female tribute from District 11. She forms an alliance with Katniss. She is twelve years old, with dark brown hair, skin and eyes. Besides this, she is similar in size and demeanor to Katniss's sister Prim, which is a major factor in Katniss's deciding to team up with her. She is the oldest of six children and worked in the orchards for her district, whose job is to grow agriculture for the Capitol and other districts. Her love of music inspires her to teach Katniss a simple 4-note melody which she used to signal quitting time in the orchards back home. Katniss and Rue use this melody as a signal call to each other to let each other know they're both safe. While Rue is setting a decoy and Katniss tries to destroy the Careers' food, Rue runs into trouble with the boy tribute from District 1, Marvel. He spears Rue through her gut, bringing on one of Katniss's arrows, which pierces him through the middle of his neck, and he drowns in his own blood. Katniss sings to Rue as she dies, and covers her with flowers before letting the hovercraft retrieve her.

The Hunger Games takes place in the futuristic ruins of North America, which crumbled and was replaced by a Capitol and 12 districts. Each district is forced to supply 2 teenagers, between 12 and 18. They participate in The Hunger Games, a televised reality series that pits the contestants against one another in a battle to the death. The heroine is 16-year old Katniss Everdeen, a skilled hunter who’s adept with a bow and arrow. She replaces her younger sister, who was chosen in a lottery. She is joined by a baker's son who is also chosen from her dirt poor home district.

The Hunger Games is set to be released on March 23rd 2012.
