David Yates could Direct Stephen King’s THE STAND, FABLES or an Al Capone Film
David Yates has become quite popular since he started directing the Harry Potter films. The guy has done a tremendous job bringing these final stories to life. There’s no doubt that the guy is talented, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he does next, so what will he do next?
If everything goes as planned Warner Bros. will lock him in to direct a film adaptation of the epic Stephen King novel The Stand. Apparently getting this adaptation made is at the top of the studios list of things to do. This is such a huge story, but that’s OK because the studio is looking to split it up into three films, making it a trilogy. This would actually be the second adaptation of the novel, the first was made in 1994 and starred Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. It was actually a really good adaptation that was told if four two hour episodes.
According to Vulture Yates is meeting with the studio tomorrow, and is expected to make a decision in the next couple of weeks. It’s either going to be this film project or an Al Capone movie that the studio is also setting up called Cicero, which will star Tom Hardy. This film was originally written in the seventies as a TV pilot by Walon Green (the screenwriter of The Wild Bunch) but is now being readapted as a film. The studio is also looking at possibly stretching this film out into more than one film as well.
If Yates ends up passing on both of those projects, the studio is also interested in bringing him on board to direct the big screen adaptation of the comic book Fables. This story is set in the Fabletown section of Manhattan's Upper West Side, it follows its sheriff, the now-reformed Big Bad Wolf, as he investigates the murder of Snow White’s party-girl sister.
He could also end up directing an adaptation of Jonathan Tropper’s family-funeral farce, This Is Where I Leave You. Which will deals with a funeral and a lot of family drama. Out of all the projects this is the least I'm interested in.
Look, fact of the matter is Yates will never have to worry about working again. The guy has a ton of offers and he’s going to take one, two, or all four. It will be interesting to see what Yates plans on doing. I hope he ends up taking The Stand though, I bet he would do a great job with it.
Which of these movie would you like to see Yates take on?
