Alex Garland is Working on a New Low-Budget Horror Movie Set in The U.K.
Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina and Annihilation, and writer of 28 Days Later and Dredd, is developing a new horror low-budget horror movie that will be set in the U.K. During a recent interview with Empire, Garland said:
“I wrote a low-budget horror film, set in the UK. I don’t know if it’s unrealistic or not. Always at this particular moment, a film always feels unrealistic, but then somehow it works out.”
The idea for the film came up while he was working on a new TV series about protests and contemporary dissent. He was hoping to bring some of the members of the cast from Devs. Things didn’t quite work out with that.
The filmmaker explained, “At some point with civil disobedience, you have to start smashing stuff up. So I was writing about the need to smash stuff up.” But, as the report points out, the events of 2020, “namely this summer’s potent and powerful Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s killing – meant a change of plans. The sense of organization, dedication and real anger that Garland feared was lost was once again alive.” Garland continued, “I thought, ‘So now what I’m writing is pointless.’ In a good way. I almost felt glad, weirdly.”
As for this new horror movie idea, Garland doesn’t offer any plot details, however, he does plan on shooting it next year if everything works out and the production comes together.
I totally dig Garland’s storytelling style and I’m curious to see what kind of story he will tell with this next film of his.
