Amazon's Scrapped SILK: SPIDER SOCIETY is on The Hunt For a New Home
Last week, it was reported that Sony’s Marvel series Silk: Spider Society is no longer moving forward at Amazon Prime Video. But, the series isn’t dead yet as the project is now being shopped around to a new streaming home.
The update was shared in a report from The Hollywood Reporter, and it will be interesting to see if the series actually finds a new home.
The series was developed by The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang and according to Deadline, Kang’s most recent pitch was actually well received.
But, it’s explained that “after deliberations where to allocate resources on genre IP projects — which are inherently pricey — a decision was made to proceed with Noir, starring Cage, and shelve Silk.”
The series would center on Korean-American spider-heroine Cindy Moon. While she was the main character, it was previously explained that at one point the series was being “refocused with a more male-skewing audience in mind.”
Cindy Moon was described in casting descriptions for the series as a Korean-American between 19 and 29 years old who is a kid from Queens who is on her own for the first time.
Although she's a total beginner in law enforcement and fighting crime, she is said to love the feeling of beating up criminals to let her frustrations out, and has an affinity for '80s and '90s pop culture.
She also struggles with her identity and heritage, but she tries to focus on her family, friends, and relationships.
The series was also produced by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with Kai Wu and Jim Barnes co-executive producing.
Amazon’s Katherine Pope previously said in an interview: "It's a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I'm really, really excited to be working with her on Silk.
“She's just brilliant and a total pro. This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level.
“They've done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we're executing at that level."
Lord and Miller also previously said in a joint statement: "We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio.
“Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be."
I was actually looking forward to watching this show because Silk is such a great and interesting character to play with. I hope that the story of Silk is eventually brought to life in some way as a film or series, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
