An OLDBOY TV Series Is in Development with Film's Director Park Chan-wook
The Oldboy franchise dates back to 1996 with the popular manga series, but it wasn’t until director Park Chan-wook’s film adaptation was released that the world became familiar with the dark drama thriller.
Well, there’s a new adaptation coming, and this time it’s in the form of a series being produced by Lionsgate Television, and developed by the original film’s director.
Lionsgate made the big announcement but didn’t really reveal any other details on what the series will entail.
Lionsgate Television executive Scott Herbst shared in a statement: "Park is one of the most visionary storytellers of our generation, and we're excited to partner with him in bringing his cinematic masterpiece to the television screen.”
He continued: “This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes, and visceral style that made the film a classic."
In the original manga, the story follows Shinichi Goto, a man who finds himself freed suddenly from an isolated private prison after a decade. He goes on to hunt for those who imprisoned him and learn why he was being targeted.
I imagine that the series will attempt to give us a faithful adaptation of the manga as it will be able to explore the characters that make up the story in a lot more depth.
It’ll be interesting to see what other creatives they bring on to develop the series.
What do you think about Lionsgate and Park Chan-wook teaming up to bring us an Oldboy series?
