Billy Joel's Classic Music Will Inspire a New Anthology TV Series Called SCENES FROM AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT
First of all, I’m a huge fan of the music of Billy Joel! “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl,” “The Longest Time,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” his music is great! If you’re also a fan of Billy Joel, you’ll be happy to learn that MGM Television is developing a new anthology series that will be inspired by this classic music.
MGM is developing the series with Universal Music Publishing Group, and it will be as a scripted "arc-thology" series called Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, which is the title of one of Joel’s favorite songs.
The show “will see each episode based on lyrics of his hits and populated by characters from his songs, including the Stranger, the Piano Man, Mamma Leone and Sgt. O'Leary. The tracks will be reimagined and rearranged by Joel's music team — with his input — and take his tunes in new directions.”
The series was created by Kevin Fox (Law & Order: SVU) with Joel producing alongside his longtime producing partner Steve Cohen. Joel's entire body of work will be licensed for the series.
MGM TV president of development and production Steve Stark had this to say in a statement:
"Billy Joel is a beautiful storyteller, and it just so happens that his stories are accompanied alongside remarkable songs. This series is going to focus less on Billy's life and more on the stories inside his catalog of classic songs."
I’m excited to see how this series turns out and how the stories that these songs tell will be brought to life. Included a few of Joel’s songs below if you need a little refresher. What are some of your favorite songs?
