CATWOMAN Director Offers His Reaction to the Film's Vicious Reviews 20 Years Later
The 2004 DC movie Catwoman did not go over well with fans or critics. This movie got completely ripped on by a lot of people the reviews were pretty vicious.
I mean, it’s not a good movie, and it seems like it was one of those films that could’ve been great with the right creative team behind it, but in the end, it’s pretty unwatchable and was a waste of money, talent, and resources.
Famed movie critic Roger Ebert notoriously put the film on his Most Hated list and singled out the director of the film, Pitof, saying:
“The director, whose name is Pitof, was probably issued with two names at birth and would be wise to use the other one on his next project.”
Yeah, that’s pretty harsh, but I also find it hilarious. During an interview with CinemaBlend, Pitof was if he ever wanted to reach out to the critics who tore Catwoman apart and he responded:
“Yeah. I would've loved to do that. But you know, when you are in front of such a wall, what can you do? Nothing.
“I mean, being violent doesn't mean anything. It’s pointless. You get punched in the face, punched in the stomach, and there's nothing you can do besides, you know, be strong.”
The film’s star Halle Berry even threw trash at the film during fer famous Razzie Award acceptance speech. Although, these days, she speaks a bit more fondly of the whole experience.
She recently said: “What I’m happy about is… the children have found it now on the internet. The kids love it. So it’s so vindicating because now they’re saying, ‘It’s cool,’ and ‘What the heck was everybody’s problem with it?’ So, I’m like, ‘I’m so brat now.'”
When talking about Berry and how the bad reviews affected her, he said: “It's unfair for her, unfair for the movie, unfair for everyone. Because when you put so much passion into telling something, and then people on your back and give the battle words and all that stuff, which is not deserved, I mean, of course. To me, it's obvious. I agree.”
Barry also went on to explain: “I felt like it was Halle Berry’s failure, but I didn’t make it alone. All these years, I’ve absolutely carried it. I didn’t love [the backlash]. Being a Black woman, I’m used to carrying negativity on my back, fighting, being a fish swimming upstream by myself.
“I’m used to defying stereotypes and making a way out of no way…It didn’t derail me because I’ve fought as a Black woman my whole life. A little bad publicity about a movie? I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t going to stop my world or derail me from doing what I love to do.”
She went on to share what she hated about the whole thing: “I hated that it got all put on me, and I hate that, to this day, it’s my failure. I know I can carry it.
“I still have a career 20 years later. It’s just part of my story. That’s okay, and I’ve carried other failures and successes. People have opinions, and sometimes they’re louder than others. You just have to keep moving.”
This is one movie that I have not grown to enjoy or appreciate over time, it’s still a poorly made movie. But, what do you all think?
