Colin Farrell Says THE BATMAN: PART II Script Is a “Masterwork” and “Really Extraordinary”
Colin Farrell has cracked open the script for The Batman: Part II, and according to him, fans are in for something special. The actor, who plays Gotham crime boss Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, couldn’t stop praising what director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have crafted for the highly anticipated sequel.
Farrell shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast , where he was promoting his new Netflix film Ballad of a Small Player. During their chat, Farrell revealed he had recently read the full script and later had a long talk with Reeves about it.
“I had so many thoughts and feelings to share with Matt about the script. I really do think it’s a masterwork. Kind of a contemporary genre masterwork. It’s so brilliant and Robert [Pattinson] has got such a lovely journey to go on and take the audience through.”
Before diving into the screenplay, Farrell admitted he had to prepare himself mentally for it. “It’s dense,” Farrell said about the script. “It’s really, really intelligent. It’s so detailed.”
The actor said he waited about two weeks before finally sitting down with a cup of tea and reading it from start to finish in just two hours. His reaction afterward? Pure admiration.
“It’s really extraordinary. I think he’s going to make an extraordinary film.”
The Batman: Part II continues Reeves’ gritty, grounded vision of Gotham City that began with the 2022 film The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. Farrell will once again step into the role of The Penguin, a part he also reprised in the HBO Max spinoff series The Penguin.
Farrell recently revealed that the events of The Batman: Part II will take place just “a few weeks after” the conclusion of that series, keeping the story tightly connected within Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga.
Production on The Batman: Part II is set to begin in spring 2026, with Reeves returning to direct. The sequel is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
With Farrell calling the script a “masterwork” and describing it as “dense” and “intelligent,” fans can expect a bold, layered continuation of the world Reeves has built.
