Fede Álvarez Steps Away From Directing ALIEN: ROMULUS Sequle and Shares Update on Production
Fede Álvarez has confirmed that he will not be returning to the director’s chair for the Alien: Romulus sequel, though he’ll still have a major role in shaping the film.
Álvarez directed the 2024 sci-fi horror hit Alien: Romulus, which took place between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. The movie starred Cailee Spaeny as Marie Raines “Rain” Carradine, David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler Harrison, and Isabela Merced as Kay Harrison.
Speaking with TooFab during Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights, Álvarez explained where things stand with the sequel.
“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel to Romulus. But I’m gonna pass the torch on this one as director. I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott, we’re gonna produce it together, and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.
“I think that’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley, filmmakers come, you make one, and you pass the baton to the next one. But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with Romulus, and we want to continue the story.
“We love the story, and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”
Instead of jumping back into another Alien film, Álvarez revealed that he wants to focus on something more personal.
“We felt it was the right time, now, to go work on an original. But I cannot tell you anything about it.”
The director said he and his longtime co-writer had been keeping this personal project “on the back burner for a while,” and now feels like the right time to finally make it happen.
As for the Alien: Romulus sequel, details on the plot are still being kept secret. It will be interesting to see who they bring on board as a director to continue the story. 20th Century Studios has not yet announced a release date.
