James Gunn Has an Idea for a Drax and Mantis Spinoff Movie and Marvel Hasn't Ruled It Out

Marvel fans are excited that James Gunn is coming back to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This next film is supposed to close out the story arc for these characters. After this movie comes out, we have no idea what will be next for some of these characters. We don’t even know if Gunn will return to helm another Marvel movie after this.

But, there is a spinoff idea that Gunn has pitched that Marvel Studios hasn’t ruled out. That movie would follow Drax and Mantis on an adventure of their own. Dave Bautista shared this bit of information in an interview with Collider, and then Gunn came in to confirm it.

When asked if he would be interested in playing Drax for a Disney+ series, he explained that he wouldn’t want to do a Drax series because of the crazy amount of hours required to put on all that makeup. But, he would be willing to star in a solo film and that’s when he revealed Gunn’s idea:

“James Gunn had the idea to do a Drax-Mantis movie. That’s what I’d be up for because there’s just too much fun there. Well, he wanted to do it, he had an idea for it. It’s just Marvel has their slot for the next fix years and they know how their story is going to go. It’s hard for them to have an idea for a film and say ‘yeah we want to fit that into here’. It just didn’t fit into their schedule.”

Gunn then responded with the following tweet:

It’s great to know that the idea hasn’t been ruled out yet! I’d love to see a Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax adventure! These two characters have been so much fun to watch together on the big screen, and a story focusing on them would be great! I’m sure if a movie like this did happen, Gunn would return to helm it. I would love to know what his idea for the story is!

Would you like to see a Drax and Mantis embark on an adventure together? Is there a story you’d like to see told?
