Kevin Feige Reveals When We'll See Evangeline Lilly Suit Up as Wasp

Ant-Man had a fine opening weekend, but I don't think it did the type of box office numbers the people at Marvel Studios were likely hoping for. That means that an immediate sequel may be less likely than it would have been otherwise, which could be disappointing for fans who were hoping to quickly see Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne character don the Wasp suit and take action alongside Paul Rudd's title hero. (Spoilers for Ant-Man ahead.) One of the film's post-credits scenes sets up Lilly's eventual reign as Wasp, but the question remains: when will we actually see her suit up?

Slashfilm asked Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige this very question, and although he didn't give as specific an answer as I would have liked, he at least gave a concrete answer:

“It’s a good question, and it will certainly be in phase three. Where exactly in phase three I’m not sure, but it won’t be in Civil War.”

Originally the character was supposed to show up in Civil War, and even though I want to see her as soon as possible, it sounds like he has a good reason for not putting her in that movie:

“She was included in early versions of Civil War but there are so many characters in Civil War that we didn’t want to do her a disservice, like she flies in, ‘I’ve got the costume now’, and she flies out. With Ant-Man, and I’m not saying thats what Ant-Man does in the movie, but we already know him, we’ve already seen him. We haven’t seen her as Wasp and we don’t want to rob the opportunity of seeing her in the outfit for at least almost the first time, and seeing her dynamic with Scott in a way it could play out, so we’re saving it. But its going to be in Phase three for sure.”

So sometime in Phase Three. That leaves a lot of options, but at least it's a real answer. I'm really hoping we get the chance to see her pop up in another film before Avengers: Infinity War begins, although I am a little concerned about stuffing too many characters into other movies going forward. I think it'll work for Civil War because of the story they're telling, but I worry that they're going to just start slotting people into other movies because they have such a large roster now and they want to give everyone some screen time. Hopefully they know what they're doing by now, and it's clear that Lilly believes they're doing right by the character — let's hope we don't have to wait too long to see her in action.
