Kylo Ren Digs Into Darth Vader’s Past in STAR WARS: LEGACY OF VADER #2 Preview
Did Darth Vader really come back to Tatooine to take revenge on Watto? That’s the question looming over Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2.
This issue follows Kylo Ren as he retraces the steps of his legendary grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, uncovering pieces of the past that shaped Vader’s descent into darkness.
The comic has already sparked discussion, thanks to preview pages released in January that appeared to show Vader killing Watto, the Toydarian junk dealer who once owned Anakin and his mother, Shmi, as slaves in The Phantom Menace.
If Vader did return for vengeance, it could be one of the most personal and brutal acts of his Sith reign.
ComicBook shared a preview of Legacy of Vader #2, written by Charles Soule with art by Luke Ross. The issue opens with Kylo Ren arriving on Tatooine, guided by Vanee, a former servant of Vader.
Kylo immediately dismisses the desert planet as a waste of time, calling it a “nowhere planet.” But Vanee sees things differently, urging Kylo to recognize its deep ties to his family.
Tatooine is where Anakin’s journey began, where he met Padmé, where the Jedi Order discovered him, and where he suffered the loss of his mother. Vanee drives this point home as he recounts one of Anakin’s defining moments: the massacre of the Tusken Raiders who tortured and killed Shmi.
It was there, in his grief and rage, that Anakin first truly tapped into the Dark Side. “Do not dismiss this place, Kylo Ren,” Vanee warns. “Tatooine is important.”
Vanee has access to this history thanks to Vader’s security codes, which allowed him to dig into Emperor Palpatine’s files. His tour continues to Mos Espa, where young Anakin, still a slave, became the first human to win the Boonta Eve Classic.
This revelation might be the moment Kylo fully grasps the reality of his grandfather’s origins, before he was a Sith Lord, before he was even a Jedi, Anakin Skywalker was a boy in chains.
While the preview doesn’t reveal Vader’s encounter with Watto, the setup is all there. The weight of Anakin’s past looms over Kylo as he pieces together his grandfather’s history.
Marvel’s official description teases an action-packed issue beyond just Kylo’s introspection:
“A RETURN TO TATOOINE! KYLO REN seeks out the home planet of his grandfather, ANAKIN SKYWALKER! The young tyrant must go up against GARDULLA THE HUTT and her guards…and a RANCOR! What secrets of the past blow in the harsh sands of MOS ESPA?”
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2 hits shelves on March 12th.
