Let's Talk About MIGHTY MORPHIN #13

The Eltarian War has begun! Mighty Morphin #13 is now available to read and it perfectly kicks off what is sure to be an intense few issues. How will the Rangers fend off the Eltarians? What is Zedd going to do during this invasion? So many questions! The series is written by Ryan Parrott with art by Marco Renna, colors by Walter Baiamonte with color assistance by Sara Antonellini and Katia Ranalli, and letters by Ed Dukeshire.

THE ELTARIAN WAR IS HERE! It’s all been building to this, the inevitable showdown between the Power Rangers and their allies and the biggest threat they’ve ever faced – the Empyreals. And yet, the shocking conclusion of the first year of Mighty Morphin may have ended the war before it even began decimating the very heart of the Power Rangers. Can the Rangers move past their betrayals in order to save Earth and the universe itself? Acclaimed Power Rangers writer Ryan Parrott, along with artist Marco Renna, debuts the Power Rangers event that will decide the fate of every Power Ranger across the universe – The Eltarian War!

Picking up where the preview leaves off, we see Billy running around the Command Center trying to contact the other Rangers to no avail. He runs into Alpha (great, Zartus’ two number one targets together) and Billy reveals that he had a backup system for Zordon in case something like this happened. He put the system into place after seeing what happened in Drakkon’s world and just kept it secret from everyone. Sadly, we don’t know how well it works because as it’s starting up, Billy gets knocked unconscious by some Eltarian guards that were combing the Command Center. I want to take a minute to really appreciate the panel where Billy morphs. It just looks so awesome!

While Billy is going on this adventure, Adam, Kim, and Rocky are fighting the Sentry Force Four and things are not going great for them. The SFF try to convince the Rangers that all the good the Eltarians can bring them is worth the price of Earth’s freedom to which the Rangers strongly disagree. I really like seeing Kim take charge as the senior Ranger. They end up escaping to Promethea where they meet up with Tommy and Aisha to talk about what’s going on. Enter Grace and Matt. Grace is not in the mood to negotiate or talk to the Rangers. Tommy tries pushing some ideas, but she quickly shuts him down, tells everyone that Zordon’s gone, and then lays down that she’s in charge. This is definitely going to cause some friction between everyone, but I don’t see another way at the moment.

A quick jump over to Bulk and Skull at the Juice Bar. Skull is sulking because they can’t find Candice and Bulk is doing his darndest. Then, the news about the Eltarians invading gets broadcast and they’re ready to get into some trouble as another possible lead to finding the girl that Skull loves. I also appreciate how Ernie is being very supportive of them and looking out for them. It’s nice.

Finally, we get to see Zedd and Zartus have a conversation. Zedd is not impressed with Zartus and isn’t so quick to believe that Zordon is truly gone. Zedd has tons of experience fighting the Rangers and knows that something always happens to help them. I really love Zedd here because he calls Zartus on so much crap. In addition to the aforementioned detail of the Rangers always finding something, he calls Zartus a coward for not talking in person; calls out the fact that his promises are useless; and then even calls out the fact that they both know that if Zartus conquers Earth and has wiped out Zordon, Zedd is next. I just love how Zedd handles it all. He then approaches his generals and sends them to the Command Center, including Finster. Finster is getting a very special mission that we don’t know yet but it’s not going to be good, I’m sure. Zedd is very excited for Finster to finish his task though and that has me worried.

I loved this introduction to the Eltarian War and can’t wait to see it continue. What do you think we’ll see in this story?
