Let's Talk About POWER RANGERS: DRAKKON NEW DAWN #2

BOOM! Studios unleashed Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn #2 today and I love it! The comic comes from writer Anthony Burch and artist Simone Ragazzoni with color by Raúl Angulo. You can check out the preview in case you missed it earlier this week and if you want to purchase the comic, you can get physical copies from your local comic shops or digital copies through outlets including comiXology.

Well, I was right! The mysterious Ranger was in fact, Jason! This is awesome. Jason has always been my favorite Ranger and it’s exciting to see him in this world of the Coinless. We learn more about his life being held a prisoner and it’s pretty depressing. He ended up only really being held captive because Drakkon threatened to have Ranger Slayer kill herself if Jason ever broke out. That’s just cruel.

Well, Adam runs in saying that a big bad from space is here and that’s when we learn about Eclipta. She’s a being from space that only serves Dark Spectre. I guess in the world of the Coinless, Ecliptor is female and isn’t a fusion of Ecliptor and Astronema like I had theorized. Well, Eclipta is bad news and Scorpina wants out. Adam gets her to stay though and Kim has to make a call as to how to deal with the new threat. Do they keep their current army of sentries as-is and hope numbers work or is Jason right that Drakkon’s diffuser weakens the power of the Power Coins and the Rangers would be better off taking their coins and in essence dismantling the army. She chooses the former much to the dismay of Jason who then leaves.

Well, the army goes to face Eclipta and things don’t go well. She definitely proves to be a challenge and almost kills Kim. Adam makes a surprise attack and maybe hurts her, but he is defeated and with bad timing, loses his powers as a Sentry making it easy for Eclipta to kill him. This of course upsets Scorpina who has a thing for the soldier, but everyone still retreats. Back in the city, the streets are filled with chaos as the Coinless are attacking the ex-sentries who no longer have powers. Finster-5 then informs Kim that “he” forced Finster to tell “him” something. That “he” is Jason and the “something” was the diffuser as we then see Jason morphed with coins for Trini and Zack.

I loved this issue. Not only did my favorite Ranger make a return, but I also really like the relationship that they built for Adam and Scorpina. There’s something really sweet about it. I really hope that when the series concludes with the next issue that we get to see Scorpina just go crazy in fighting Eclipta. In fact, I think Scorpina could be a cool Blue Ranger since Billy’s dead. Then again, I guess it’s possible that he’s not dead since everyone thought Jason was dead, but I find it more likely that he stays dead. Scorpina has really undergone some changes and I would love to see her become a Power Ranger in this world.
