Let's Talk About POWER RANGERS: DRAKKON NEW DAWN #3

It’s here! The third and final issue of Power Rangers: Drakkon New Dawn. It’s a bit of a doozey. The story is written by Anthony Burch with art by Simone Ragazzoni. It’s definitely one to check out if you’re a fan of Power Rangers. You can purchase physical copies of Drakkon New Dawn #3 from your local comic shops or digital copies through outlets like comiXology.

After a devastating loss to the enemy, Kimberly and the remaining Power Rangers must rally their remaining forces in a final stand against Lord Drakkon’s cruel world-ending contingency plan. The Rangers will take on an enemy never before seen in Power Ranger history!

Picking up where the preview left off, we have Jason and Kim talking. Jason definitely feels hurt, especially when his old friends apparently don’t want to be Power Rangers anymore. All of those years being a prisoner really got to him. He insists that condensing the power to even just himself would be incredible. Thankfully, Kim is there to be a good friend and help him realize the problem with his thinking and how that’s exactly what Drakkon thought.

Jason eventually gives in and decides that Kim’s right. They’re able to take all the Power Coins including Kim’s and give everyone powers. They then call themselves the Shattered and fight Eclipta, who has grown. Jason pilots Zerdd (the giant Zedd Zord that Finster-5 had), and it helps a little. Scorpina gets Eclipta in the eye and that forces her to shrink. Sadly, this is when the powers run out of juice and everyone becomes a civilian again. Their sheer numbers are able to overpower Eclipta though, and the day is saved. Kim does a nice little epilogue voice over about how they’re rebuilding. The issue, and the story, ends with an evil, armored Andros who appears to work for Dark Specter with a wicked-looking weapon arrive on Earth.

I honestly don’t like the ending simply because this is supposed to be the last issue. If I knew about another comic that was going to focus on the Shattered, then this would be cool, but right now I’m not aware of any, so having this kind of ending is just unsatisfactory.

Also, I’m not a big fan of the new costumes they get with the combined powers. I appreciate the nods to their original morphed forms, but I just felt underwhelmed. I understand this is a very subjective point. It just didn’t do it for me. It also bothered me a little that Jason got his prisoner armor put on. The powers should be giving him new life, not chaining him up again.

Overall, I did enjoy the story for Drakkon New Dawn, and honestly, without that last page, I would’ve said the ending was perfect. Heck, even if they were setting up a new comic, I would’ve preferred that last page to not be there. I just love that last page of Kim doing the voice over and explaining that they’re not perfect, but they’re still going to fight if anything else comes their way.
