Of Course Jared Leto Made Himself Go Blind For BLADE RUNNER 2049
We all know that Jared Leto like to go to the extreme to get into character in the movies he stars in. He went to crazy lengths to become the characters he played in Dallas Buyers Club and Suicide Squad. Well, director Denis Villeneuve has revealed that Leto intentionally blinded himself for the role of Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve said:
"He could not see at all. He was walking with an assistant, very slowly. it was like seeing Jesus walking into a temple. Everybody became super silent, and there was a kind of sacred moment. Everyone was in awe. It was so beautiful and powerful -- I was moved to tears."
He blinded himself by wearing cloudy contact lenses. It's not like he gouged his eyes out or anything, but knowing Leto, he probably considered it. The director went on to say:
"We all heard stories about Jared, how he transforms into the characters, but even this didn't prepare me for what was to come."
Whether you like Leto or not, you can't deny that the guy has a crazy level of discipline and willingness to engulf himself in the characters that he plays.
As far as the contacts that he's wearing goes, they give the character a pale gray tint, which is the sign of a replicant. Leto's character, Niander Wallace, is a replicant himself and a brilliant and ruthless scientist who claims to have created the perfect replicant. We previously posted a great short film that offers some interesting background information on the character.
Blade Runner 2049 will hit theaters on October 6, 2017.
