Phil Lord and Chris Miller Will Direct Ryan Gosling in the Astronaut Thriller PROJECT HAIL MARY

Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) are set to direct Ryan Gosling in his upcoming film project Project Hail Mary for MGM.

The movie is based on The Martian author Andy Weir's upcoming novel of the same name, and the story centers on “a solitary astronaut on a space ship who is trying to save Earth.” Gosling will take on the lead role, and it will be the second movie in a row where he plays an astronaut. The last film he made was the 2018 film First Man, where he took on the role of Neil Armstrong.

It’s also explained that there “are some very clever twists,” and it is “consistent with the ingenuity that made The Martian a thrilling ride.”

It’ll be interesting to see Lord and Miller tackle a project like this that isn’t a comedy because that’s all they’ve only really done. The last time they attempted to direct a movie that wasn’t a comedy was Lucasfilm’s Solo, and we all know how that turned out.

These guys have proven that they’re talented directors, though, and it’s good to see them take on a different kind of project and genre. I’m curious to see what they do with it.
