Over the weekend, the second trailer for Matt ReevesThe Batman dropped, and holy crap! This new Batman movie looks freakin’ amazing! I’m so pumped up to see this movie!

Before the trailer premiered at DC FanDome, Reeves and Robert Pattinson talked about the movie and shared some insight on this new version of Batman that is being brought to the big screen. This is definitely going to be a different version of the character during a time in Batman’s journey that hasn’t really been explored in the films before.

In the presentation, the director and actor teased that Pattinson’s version of the character is more fueled by rage and is more out of control than other iterations of Batman. He said:

"I really did think, this version of this character ... if you think of Bruce Wayne as a recluse rockstar in a decaying manor, there's this part of me that so saw you as that. And I had no idea that you would be interested in playing this role at all ... but then it turned out that you completely on your own had a whole path to the same thing, which is that you had been obsessed with Batman for years. So when you found out that we were doing this version, you were very interested.

"Then when we met, I really felt that connection with you where I felt like, 'Oh we're going to be able to find something new with this guy and do something really special.' For me, you were always that version of what I saw on the page and that was about trying to create a new version of Bruce."

Pattinson responded by offering some insight into Batman’s psyche:

"He doesn't have as much control over his personality. The delineation between when he's Batman and when he's Bruce is not so clear. In other iterations, he really knows what he's doing when he's putting on the cowl. I kind of really liked this idea: it's a little bit out of control. He hasn't completely defined what Batman is. He gets lost in it. Whenever he's putting it on every night, he's basically not sleeping and becoming this quite sort of odd creature."

I’ve personally loved what I’ve seen from Pattinson’s Batman. You can tell that he’s putting a lot of energy and madness into the character, and I can’t wait to see how his story arc plays out over the course of this first film.

The Batman is described as being a dark, noir-style film that will lean into Batman in his detective mode. Reeves said that it’s going to tell a deep and psychological story. This will be a “year two” story for Batman that acknowledges his origin and how it’s still something that he’s “majorly struggling” with.

There will be a series of murders and crimes that start taking place in Gotham and as Batman investigates those things, they begin to reveal the darkness of Gotham City to him.

The film also stars Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson. Gil Perez-Abraham (Orange is the New Black), Charlie Carver (Teen Wolf), and Max Carver have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

The Batman releases on March 4, 2022.
