Simon West's THE BLOB Remake Will be More Like ALIEN and PREDATOR
Last month we reported that action movie director Simon West (Con Air) would be remaking the classic sci-fi horror film The Blob. This is a very recognizable horror film franchise, and I believe this remake has the potential to be the biggest and most successful version of it.
Thanks to the director of the film, we have some new details on his vision for The Blob. In an interview with Den of Geek he compares the Blob itself to the extraterrestrial villains of the Alien and Predator franchises. He explains:
"Yeah, it’s definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies. My version of The Blob’s going to be more sci-fi.
"The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of Alien and Predator and things like that – much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito. This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature – because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."
It should be interesting to see where the Blob came from, and to get an explanation on how it works. West goes on to say this will also be an invasion movie, and explains where it is in the development process:
"This thing's come from another planet, and also, we don't know how many there are. It's fun at the moment - while I'm prepping this other film, The Blob is a bit longer term. I'm having a lot of designing this creature, what its talents are, its attributes, how you can think you've defeated it, but you haven't. It's fun inventing a creature like that - like the new Alien or the new Predator."
I really like the original film 1958 film, and I recently re-watched the 1988 version that was co-written by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Walking Dead). I didn't really like that movie when I saw it back in the day, but I surprisingly really enjoyed it this last time I watched it. Mind you, I haven't seen it since it was first released in theaters.
The Blob is a cult classic alien monster, and I hope West can bring it to life in a fun an terrifying way. What do you think about what his plans are from bringing it to life?
