SPIDER-MAN 4 Will Reportedly Be a Soft Reboot for Tom Holland’s Wall-Crawler

The rumor mill has been spinning about Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' plans for Spider-Man 4. While some of these rumors have been outlandish, there is a common thread among insiders that point to one main reason for the delay… creative differences.

Apparently the studios and producers are trying to figure out how to best move forward with the web-slinger’s next chapter.

The script has reportedly gone through a major overhaul, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Tom Rothman finally settling on a vision, which is said to be a mostly grounded story with some multiversal elements.

Up until recently, the project was still being described as an "Avengers-level event," but now it appears the focus has shifted toward a fresh take on Peter Parker’s journey.

Now it sounds like Marvel and Sony are using this film as an opportunity to reshape the franchise.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Spider-Man 4 will be a "new take" on the character, with director Destin Daniel Cretton steering Peter Parker into uncharted territory.

This shift includes a new supporting cast, which has fueled speculation that the film will serve as a soft reboot though Richtman did not use the term reboot.

The biggest changes that may come include Peter is reportedly getting a new love interest, with Zendaya’s involvement in the movie expected to be minimal. He’ll also be in college when we catch up with him, which is likely where his new supporting cast will come into play.

As for the villain, word is that Spidey will face off against a foe who has never appeared in live-action before, which will be interesting depending on who it is. Previous installments have mostly pulled from a familiar rogues’ gallery.

While the overall tone may not shift dramatically, some fans have been hoping for a slightly darker approach to the character. Given the ending of No Way Home, with Peter alone and starting from scratch, a more mature, street-level story would certainly make sense.

Tom Holland has acknowledged the weight of getting this next chapter right. In a previously interview, he addressed the ongoing development process:

"We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be. But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect. The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing."

Clearly, the creative team isn’t rushing things. They’ve been taking their time to figure out what "the right thing" actually looks like for this iteration of Spider-Man.

With so many rumors and unverified retorts flying around, it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. If every rumor were true, Spider-Man 4 would feature Holland’s Peter Parker teaming up with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, alongside Venom, Ghost Rider, Black Cat, Daredevil, and The Punisher, while facing off against Mephisto, Vulture, Knull, and an army of Symbiotes.

Yeah... probably not happening. Regardless, it’s clear that Spider-Man 4 will mark a turning point for Holland’s Spidey, we’ll just have to wait and see that that will be.
