The Banner Saga: Warbands Is Coming To The Tabletop
Stoic's acclaimed strategy RPG series The Banner Saga is expanding its kingdom to the realm of board games soon. Developed in conjunction with Versus Evil and Megacon games, the title will launch the official Kickstarter campaign to fund it, but no official date has been set. In fact, there is next to nothing else we know about the game, other than the image you see above (from the live website). There is one blurb from the developers however, though it is listed towards the bottom of the page. It says, "An innovative, cooperative miniature-based board game that deals with the difficulties and consequences of decision making." One could infer that the same grid-based combat in the digital game would be the base, and I always love having new miniatures to paint, so that's a plus. I do hope that the decisions they are referring to go beyond the "lose some health or gold" consequences of most games, and offer something a little more intricate or narrative focused.
All this brought up a good question that I would love to hear your feedback on.
In The Banner Saga's case, the series has been commercially successful and critically acclaimed, so there is a certain level of trust and belief that the product will turn out to be a quality game. Let's open that up though. What other video game properties do you think would translate well to the tabletop? Heck, even if it won't translate well, just name a series you would love to see try!
Speaking for myself, I would love to somehow see the Suikoden series reinvented as a board game. The IP isn't being used at the moment, and in the right hands the base building, 3 tiered battle system, and the 108 stars could really be put into something unique. I would love to hear your thoughts.
MegaCon Games showed off a few of the miniatures at their booth (via @MegaconGames Twitter page).
