The Challenger Space Shuttle Explosion Explored in Trailer for Netflix's Docuseries CHALLENGER: THE FINAL FLIGHT

Like many of you, on January 28, 1986, I was sitting in a classroom in elementary school watching the launch of the space shuttle Challenger. I was in the second grade, and I remember this moment vividly. I was in awe as I watched the shuttle lift off on its way to space. At 11:39 am ET, 73 seconds into its flight, me, my classmates, and the rest of the world watched in horror as the space shuttle Challenger exploded. I remember jumping out of my seat as a wave of panic crashed over me. I was looking around at everyone else in the room wondering if this was real and if everyone in the room was seeing what I was seeing. Everyone started breaking down crying realizing that all seven astronauts were dead. It was just such a heavy and emotional day.

Netflix has released a trailer for a new documentary series titled Challenger: The Final Flight, and it is going to take a deep dive into the history and details of this tragic historical disaster.

The docuseries comes from filmmakers Steven Leckart, Daniel Junge, and executive producer J.J. Abrams and it will be a four-part docuseries that “examines the 1986 Challenger space shuttle, which tragically broke apart 73 seconds after launch as millions of Americans—many of them schoolchildren— watched live on television. The series offers an in-depth look at one of the most diverse crews NASA assembled, including high school teacher Christa McAuliffe, who was selected to be the first private citizen in space.”

It also includes conversations with the crew’s surviving family members and will examine the “fatally flawed decision process and mechanical failures that led to the disaster, interviewing former NASA officials and engineers who worked on the failed booster engine and had repeated concerns about its safety.”

We will also get to see “never-before-seen interviews, training footage and rare archival material to give viewers the most unfiltered, emotional behind-the-scenes look at these events to date.”

Challenger: The Final Flight seems like it will be the most in-depth look at the story behind the Challenger explosion yet. It arrives on Netflix on September 16th.
