The Director of BIRDS OF PREY Shares Some Wacky Alternate Fight Scenes and Says They Had To Show Some Restraint
Leading up to the release of DC’s Bird’s of Prey there was a lot of talk from the creative team hyping up the R-rating and the crazy girl gang aspect of the film. Then when I saw it, I was disappointed. One of the main reasons is because I felt they were holding back, that they didn’t go full-on Harley Quinn crazy. I felt the character deserved more and better.
The DC Universe animated series is what I hoped the movie would be. That series actually has a proper understanding of the character. Director Cathy Yan recently shared some interesting comments about Birds of Prey, including some crazy weird fight scenes that had originally been written for the movie.
"When you set an action sequence in an evidence room, it's really fun and you can come up with so much stuff," Yan revealed. "We had so many different ideas. At one point [screenwriter] Christina Hodson wanted a giant double-ended dildo that [Harley] had to fend off. I wanted her to have a big fluffy bear stuffed with drugs that she used as a pillow to fight with.”
That’s the kind of stuff that the animated series would do! That’s some of the insane stuff I thought I’d see in the movie. After all, the had an R-rating, but apparently, they didn’t want to cross the line too far. The next comment that Yan made explains a lot. She said:
“We had to show some sort of restraint. It's a cheeky movie – unapologetically so.”
There it is… they had to show some restraint. I’m not sure if they lifted that restraint if the film would have been any better as the all-around story was weak. But, it’s interesting that after talking up the R-rating, you think they would actually take advantage of it.
