THE WALKING DEAD Producers Offer Update on the Making of the Rick Grimes Spin-Off Movie

The producers of The Walking Dead are gearing up for their three series panels coming to Comic-Con@Home this Friday, and while we wait to see what the upcoming seasons have in store, we’ve got an update on the making of the upcoming Rick Grimes spin-off film that is supposed to be heading to theaters to piece together what happened to the Walking Dead star. While the update is pretty lackluster, and pretty much what you’re expecting, it’s still good to hear that it’s being worked on and hasn’t fallen by the wayside in the midst of the pandemic.

In a recent virtual Skybound Xpo panel (via ComicBook.com), Skybound Entertainment co-founder David Alpert said:

"We're coming along in a big way. We're just in this particular space where we have [to wait]. We can't shoot right now, so that's just the big thing holding us back. We are desperate to get back into production, and get everything going," he continued, "but we have something really exciting, really unique, really different, and can't wait to get it going. We just have to wait for it to be safe."

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman added reassurance about the project, saying:

"There's tons of stuff going on behind the scenes. I don't want anyone to think that we're just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end." 

"I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better. I think the Rick Grimes movie chief among them, just because we're getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it's perfect. But when things do quiet down, you guys are going to hear a ton more about this movie."

This has been a resounding sentiment from filmmakers everywhere during the pandemic shutdowns. Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman also said that the quarantine allowed him to slow down and take a much more in-depth look at the movie he was making, and gave him the opportunity to fine tune small aspects that he never would have had the time to do otherwise.
