There's a UNIVERSAL SOLDIER Reboot in the Works From THE EQUALIZER Screenwriter
The 1992 action film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren is the latest film franchise to get the big Hollywood reboot. The movie is currently being written by Richard Wenk, the screenwriter of The Equalizer. He announced the news himself during an interview with Discussing Film saying:
“I will say that I’m just finishing up a re-imagining — let’s be clear about this it’s not a remake and it is not a redo — but it is a re-imagining of a movie called ‘Universal Soldier’…very much like ‘The Equalizer,’ it’s the title that inspired me and not the movies…I’m just about to finish (the script) and turn it in this week.”
I like how he has to make a point to say that his project is a “re-imagining”. But, we all know that regardless of what he wants us to call it, the movie is a reboot of an older film.
The report goes on to say that “although the original features two main characters, the re-imagining will only feature a sole solider.” The film is being produced by Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal and the script is set to be turned in next week.
The project is still in the early stages of development, but one day we might actually see a new Universal Soldier film on the big screen.
I enjoyed The Equalizer films. They were pretty badass, so if Wenk can bring that solid screenwriting and badassery to a reboot of Universal Soldier… cool!
Universal Soldier spawned a few sequels that included Universal Soldier: The Return, Universal Soldier: Regeneration and Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning. This franchise has a loyal fanbase and I’ll be interested in seeing how they react to the news that the franchise is getting a reboot.
