THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi Explains Why They Changed The Setting of Where Hela Destroys Thor's Hammer

When the first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok was revealed, fans were shocked to see Cate Blanchette's Hela obliterate Thor's Hammer, Mjölnir. In that original trailer, she destroyed the hammer in a New York City alley. I'm sure you've all noticed that in the most recent trailers, that location changed and is now set in a wide open green field.

There's a reason for this change and in a recent interview with DigitalSpy, director Taika Waititi explains why they ended up changing this setting, saying:

"Here's the thing, alley ways aren't cool. Fields are cool. Ask anyone."

Of course, he's being playful there with his answer, but he does get a bit more serious as he continues. I will warn you, though, the following description contains spoilers.

The director explains:

"We originally shot some of that stuff on the set of our stuff in New York. What we wanted to do was have them go down to Earth and they see Doctor Strange and stuff but it felt too convenient that he was suddenly just down the road in an alley and also everything, up to then, everything was so fast-paced and all over the place. We wanted to go somewhere peaceful and actually chill out with those characters and be with Odin while he imparts this wisdom and stuff and not have to hear stupid yellow cabs honking out the back."

It actually did turn out to be a great moment that involved Odin and his two sons. It was the calm before the storm. Waititi goes on to say:

"It just felt like a terrible environment to have a scene that could be very emotional for what happens with Odin and the boys, and the first time we've seen the three guys all together, and him telling them he loves them and acknowledging Loki as his son. It was just very important for us to be in a beautiful peaceful environment."

The director made the right call in changing things up. I enjoyed how this whole sequence played out and I think fans will too.

Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters November 3, 2017.
