UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: FRANKENSTEIN Comic Book Series Announced

Universal is teaming up with Skybound Comic for a new comic book miniseries, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein, with writer and artist Michael Walsh. This is the third comic in a series from Skybound about Universal Monsters.

The comic will offer a fresh take on Mary Shelley’s iconic gothic horror story, and it will also include some of James Whale’s 1931 film adaptation.

The synopsis of the first issue reads, “In this first issue, Dr. Henry Frankenstein begins his unholy quest to create life by robbing the grave of a decorated police officer to find necessary parts, specifically a strong pair of hands. But little does he know that the corpse has a son who is mourning a father – and that this young boy will forever change Frankenstein’s life.”

Walsh who previously worked on Comeback, The Silver Coin, X-Men, Spider-Man, the X-Files, Star Wars, and art for Magic: The Gathering cards, said in a statement: “The story of Dr. Frankenstein and his poor, misunderstood monster is one of the most recognizable and influential horror tales ever told… It’s also one of my favorites. The original 1931 film from Universal Pictures is a continuing inspiration for my art and storytelling, so, as you can imagine, I was honored to be able to play in that sandbox. Trying to tell an original story while staying true to the canon of that film was an exciting yet daunting prospect. It’s been some of the most fun I’ve had making comic books, and I know that fans of Frankenstein and horror will have a blast experiencing these characters and iconic scenes like never before.”

The Universal Monsters: Frankenstein series follows comic book adaptations of Dracula and The Creature From the Black Lagoon, which is available next month.

Issue #1 of the Universal Monsters: Frankenstein comic will be released by Image Comics on August 28, 2024.
