Why the AVENGERS: ENDGAME Rerelease Scene Ended Up Cut From the Film's Final Edit
Many of you know by now that the cut scene from Avengers: Endgame that was added to the rereleased cut in theaters last weekend showed a fire chief played by Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard, Family Matters) and his crew witnessing Endgame’s smart Hulk rescuing a building full of people from a fire by scooping them up in a satellite dish and delivering them to safety.
This is when fans realize that Bruce Banner has occupied the body of the Hulk as he explains to the firefighters the best way to scientifically extinguish the fire. The cut scene ends with the Hulk answering a tablet like a phone, then cuts to him at the restaurant with Steve, Scott and Natasha, which is where we pick up in the final cut of the film.
This actually sounds like a really fun and cool scene to see, but with an over three hour film, you have to make cuts somewhere. Recently, in an interview with the LA Times, the film’s screenwriters, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, gave the following comment about why this scene was taken from the final cut of the film:
“You never know what’s actually going to make it out into the world,” Markus said.
“We did have a scene illustrating more actively what the Hulk had been up to in terms of being a hero, as opposed to just starting it in the diner and explaining things. But it didn’t give you anything that you didn’t get from just sitting in the diner eating pancakes. And it came off more as noise than as content.”
Added McFeely, “It takes us forever to learn these things. But if the scene is not doing more than one thing, it’s probably not worthy of being in the movie.”
That makes sense. The writers even went on to say that there were ideas about scenes that chronicled the 18 month process in the gamma lab that showed what it took to create the fusion, but those ideas were ultimately scrapped.
I’m such a huge fan of the film, that I’m perfectly happy with how they cut it and the final product. But I am excited to see that extra scene and all the fun bonus material that will be included in the DVD and Blu-ray of the film when it comes out to own on August 13th.
Will you be picking up a copy? What scene are you most excited about viewing again?
